What is a crown?
Crowns are often used to restore the form, function and strength of a tooth that cannot be restored with conventional filling material.
When is a crown recommended?
A crown is often recommended following a root canal filling to protect and strengthen the tooth. Alternatively, a crown can be used where a tooth has been heavily filled to improve the strength of the tooth and its appearance.
What types of crown are available?
At Smilecare we provide different types of crowns to suit all budgets. Costs often reflect the quality of the materials and the craftsmanship involved in designing your bespoke crown.
We offer the latest ceramic, metal free, restorations combined with the latest computer-aided (CAD/CAM) technology for an attractive aesthetic look, durability and a precision fit. We use Zirconia, Empress or Emax porcelain made from the best Dental Laboratories in the UK. Our dentists are happy to discuss what might be suitable for you.
What does the treatment involve?
The damaged or root-filled tooth needs to be prepared before the crown is put in place. Your dentist will remove a layer of the tooth to allow for the thickness of the crown so that it fits in with the surrounding teeth.
An impression is then taken to help create the crown, and the shade of the tooth is matched to the surrounding teeth.
Is the treatment painful?
Preparing the tooth is similar to a filling, we use a local anaesthetic so that you feel comfortable at all times.
