Tooth whitening has been around for many years and has been proven, in professional hands, to be safe and effective. With more media coverage of whitening there has been an explosion of different products available on the market. Many over the counter products have varying results and are often very acidic which can result in long term tooth erosion. Similarly Beauty salons and hairdressers whom have no formal dental training are using Chlorine Dioxide to whiten teeth, which can have long term detrimental effects to your dentition. The only as yet proven safe method to lighten teeth is to use Hydrogen Peroxide.

At Smilecare we tried, tested and reviewed a number professional products available on ourselves and concluded that the best product available was the Advanced Zoom Tooth Whitening system.  We were one of the first practices in the U.K to have taken delivery of the Zoom laser whitening system, which to date has had more accreditation then any other in-house whitening system currently on the market. It has been widely tested in America and has gained a lot of positive media coverage as 'the,' whitening system used in the T.V series Extreme Makeover.

Zoom tooth whitening is the fastest way to whiten your teeth and is done in our surgery. The first process in tooth whitening is to examine your mouth to make sure that all your fillings are intact and that your teeth are suitable. If your teeth have lots of surface stain then we often recommend an Air Polishing procedure with our Hygienists so that the whitening gel can whiten more effectively. Once our short assessment is complete the process takes approximately one hour during which whitening gels are gently applied to your teeth and the Zoom light is used to accelerate the whitening process until the desired tooth shade is achieved.
Alternatively, we can provide home whitening kits that achieve similar results over a longer period of time. An impression is taken of your teeth and two custom made trays are made to contain the whitening gel. Patients take the trays and gel home and are advised to wear the trays for prolonged periods (usually through the night) for several sessions until the whitening process is complete. Results using this method are comparable to laser whitening, but some patients find it a less convenient method of whitening their teeth.
